The Greenways Foundation promotes greenways, blueways and multi-use trails in IndianaSTATEWIDE EDITION: SEPTEMBER 2009On the Path features Indiana trails and greenways news from the Greenways Foundation. Henry County Opens the National Road Heritage TrailNearly 5 miles were added to the cross-state National Road Heritage Trail project in Henry County this summer by the Raintree Trails group of Healthy Communities of Henry County, bringing the cross-state total to 31 miles out of a planned 150 miles. The new trail, which is the first section of the NRHT to open east of Greenfield and Hancock County, has a crushed limestone base suitable for foot or fat-tire bicycle traffic. The trail is initially divided into two sections, a 1 ¾-mile section east of Raysville (Knightstown), and a 2.3-mile section west of Lewisville. The NRHT in Henry County follows the former Pennsy railbed and parallels US40, the original National Road. The rail-trail projects received a $650,000 DNR grant in 2008 for the stone surfacing, asphalt ramps, and two parking areas. Future work will concentrate on linking the two open sections as well as land acquisition across the entire county. September 2009 |
